Competition and climate effects on plant population dynamics

Predicting the effects of climate change on plant populations will require understanding the relative importance of climate and competition in regulating population dynamics. I am using a set of unique, long-term datasets to evaluate competition and climate effects on temporal variation in species abundance in grassland plant communities. Here are a few of the questions I am asking:

  • Do climate or competition variables better explain plant population dynamics?
  • Across all species, are there patterns in response to competition and climate? Does plant functional type or lifespan, for example, explain species reponses to climate and competition variables?
  • Which climate and compeition variables are most important to species responses?
