Get Involved
Visit our Perry Pollinator Habitat Facebook page to keep up-to-date on the Perry Pollinator Habitat Enhancement project and learn about on-site volunteer opportunities, either as a group or individually. Volunteer activities include weeding and mulching; pictures of weeds and native plants are on the Facebook page to help with identificiation. Contact us for more information!
What is a Citizen Scientist?
Citizen Science is a concept that has been around since the mid-1990’s and helps describe participation and collaboration between scientists and members of the general public. It can be used to collect data and address pertinent scientific questions. Many groups and organizations can benefit from public participation in the data collection process.
Other Ways to Contribute: Community Science Projects In Your Area
A great way to share your photos of monarch adults, larvae and eggs is through the “Monarch Butterfly Conservation in Utah” project on iNaturalist. All you need to do is set up a free account on iNat and download the app to your device or access the website from a browser. You can report details regarding your findings such as numbers of monarchs and milkweed present, and information about the habitat. iNaturalist can also help you identify which milkweed species you have encountered.
UPP is a community science project dedicated to collecting essential distribution and habitat use data for sensitive pollinator species across Utah. Observations submitted of all bumble bees, monarchs at all life stages, and several other rare butterfly species help Utah’s Rare Insect Program gather valuable data to inform conservation efforts for rare insect pollinators. Volunteers can also sign up to assess monarch habitat sites to monitor for summer breeding activity and habitat quality. Submit your photos of these target pollinators through the UPP form on Survey123.
WMMM is a regional database that receives community scientist submissions of monarchs and milkweed across the Western U.S. One way to share monarch and milkweed sightings is via the SOS app, which is available for iPhones and PC devices. Utah Pollinator Pursuit data are also reported to WMMM each year.
BBW is a collaborative effort to track and conserve North America’s bumble bees. Volunteers can upload photos of bumble bees to start a virtual collection, help researchers determine the status and conservation needs of bumble bees, and help locate rare or endangered populations of bumble bees. Bumble bee data submitted to Utah Pollinator Pursuit are also reported to BBW each year.
