UFRI

Utah Forest Restoration Institute

About Us

Utah’s forests are shaped by wildfire and other natural disturbances that can impact natural ecosystems and communities. The Utah Forest Restoration Institute (UFRI), based at Utah State University, will inform the management of fire risks and fire effects to improve resistance and resilience, offer training opportunities for the next generation of Utah forest managers, and create new ways for managers and researchers to collaborate given Utah’s unique mix of forests, woodlands, and wildfire. Thanks to a new ongoing appropriation by the Utah Legislature, UFRI joins existing institutes in adjacent Southwest states in efforts to improve the health of forest and woodland ecosystems in the region by leveraging best-science practices to reduce the risks and impacts of wildfire and other disturbances.

Mission

Improve the health of Utah's forests and woodland ecosystems by better understanding and managing for the resistance and resilience to disturbances in the face of environmental change.

Institute Objectives

  • Convene workshops, conferences, webinars, and trainings to build a community of practice in Utah.
  • Catalyze efforts toward enhancing forest resilience by synthesizing cutting-edge science on forest dynamics, forest restoration, and pre- and post-fire treatments for all types of land ownership.
  • Train students in up-to-date monitoring skills and management practices.
  • Work with existing agency monitoring efforts to gather and synthesize data on immediate and long-term vegetation changes and treatment options.
  • Coordinate with agencies to ensure that fire and fuels information and management resources are accessible to all affected parties.
  • Facilitate public outreach about benefits of adaptive management of forest and woodland resources.
  • Increase public understanding and acceptance of how Utah residents can comfortably coexist with fire, disturbance, and active forest management.
