For many years, Joe and Jessie Quinney demonstrated their support for the natural environment through their actions and resources. They pioneered the development of Utah's ski industry, converting the mountain slopes above the mining town of Alta into one of America's premier ski areas. Joe's love for duck hunting led to more organized use and protection of Utah's wetlands. Through their financial support and Joe's service on the QCNR Advisory Board, the Quinneys helped develop an outstanding QCNR at USU. Their lives made Utah's outdoors more secure for generations to come. In memory of Mr. and Mrs. Quinney, the members of the S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney Foundation have provided a grant to ensure the Quinney's lifelong interest in natural resources will be carried on through the educational support of Quinney scholars.

Quinney Scholarships of $8,000 per year for up to 4 years will be awarded to freshmen and incoming transfer students for the upcoming academic school year. Quinney Scholarships can be awarded in addition to USU admissions scholarships.

Criteria: Incoming students (current high school students or transfer students). Students must have a 3.5 GPA and a preferred minimum 27 ACT or 1260 SAT score to apply. Incoming students who have not taken the ACT/SAT may also apply.

Application Process

To apply, submit the following:

1. Letter of Introduction
   
   • Full name, current address, email address, phone number, current high school or college, and intended QCNR major;
   • A statement (approx. 200–400 words) of why you are interested in coming to the Quinney College of Natural Resources at Utah State University;
   • What you hope to do with your degree.
2. Resume: Include scholarly achievements, academic interests, and involvement in extracurricular activities.
3. Current unofficial transcript from your high school/transfer college.
4. Copy of ACT/SAT scores, if available (showing the individual category scores as well as the composite score).
5. Essay: How can science contribute to the management of the environment and natural resources?  Choose one example to discuss in detail, and explain how you hope to make a contribution to environment and natural resources fields in the future. You may find it useful to explore QCNR web pages to get an idea of how our faculty and students are making such contributions. Essay is limited to 2 pages single spaced.
6. One letter of reference from a person in a position to evaluate your scholarly ability and motivation to work in environment and natural resources. The letter of reference may be submitted separately via email by the referee to izzy.wappett@usu.edu.
