QCNR Building

Induction course goals:

  1. Help incoming cohorts of graduate students get to know one another and many others in the WATS community.
  2. Introduce some foundational concepts and big ideas in watershed sciences to be built upon in the ‘Big Ideas’ course.
  3. Demonstrate a sampling of the diversity of thought and methods in the Department of Watershed Sciences.
  4. Get students acquainted with some of the key policies and procedures of the Department and University.

2022 WATS Graduate Induction Course
August 22-26

Sample Itinerary (yet to be updated for summer 2022 course)

Monday –  Bear River and Great Salt Lake

  • 8:00 – 8:30 Old Main Hill: Welcome and brief introduction (Belmont)
  • 8:30 Load vans (Old Main Parking Lot)
  • 8:30 – 10:30 Bear River Bottoms: water management, dams, decision-making, sampling stream habitat for water resources modeling (Null)
  • 10:30–2:30 Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge: wetland ecosystems and lunch at refuge (Kettenring)
  • 2:30 – 3:00 Willard Bay: water management and Great Salt Lake (Null, Kettenring)
  • 4:15-5:00 Return to Logan, Grad student insights and recommendations
  • 7:00 Dinner and Social, all faculty and new students. Location TBD (SO & spouses, children most welcome)

Tuesday – Bear Lake (camping)

  • 8:00 Load Vans (parking lot behind NR  Building)
  • 9:30 – 2:00 Limnology and Fish Ecology at Bear Lake Marina (Walsworth, Brothers)
  • 2:00 – 5:00 Lake biogeochemistry (Brahney)
  • 6:00 Camp Dinner and Social with WILD Incoming Grad Students. Bear Lake Rendezvous Beach Group Campsite, Site: Cottonwood A & B

Wednesday – Tetons (camping)


Thursday – Tetons (camping)

  • 7:00 – 8:00 Breakfast and Load Vans    
  • 8:00 – 11:00 Drive to Tetons
  • 12ish Float Deadman’s Bar to Moose
  • 5:00 Hike?
  • 6:30 Dinner and Camp, Gros Ventre Campground, Group Site: C

Friday –Tetons (return to Logan)

  • 7:00 – 8:00 Breakfast and load Vans
  • 10:00 – 2:00 Float Alpine reach of the Snake River
  • 2:00 – 5:00 Return to Logan
