Marine Science - Minor

Department of Watershed Sciences

Through coursework and immersive experiences, the marine science minor introduces students to marine ecosystems, marine biota, the chemical and physical properties of the ocean and the seafloor, and the conservation and management of marine resources.

The marine science minor is limited to students enrolled in a Watershed Sciences bachelor’s degree program to ensure students have the relevant complementary science background and experiences to make the minor a valuable addition when they are applying for jobs. The curriculum was developed to ensure that USU marine science minors receive a rigorous program of study with several opportunities for experiential learning. The minor requirements are achievable for individuals enrolled in a Watershed Sciences bachelor’s degree with no additional time required to earn their degree.

Trisha Atwood and Edd Hammill lead the Coral Reefs Field Course available to undergrad students. This course is a 13-day field course on the biology and ecology of coral reefs and their many inhabitants. This course is taught at the Heron Island Research Station located in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Each year, the students share their adventures on the class blog site and photo page. A few of the highlights are featured below.
